This article was just posted today. That just shows how quickly technology is changing. Kindle buyers can download from the kindle to their PCs. This new technology became available on Tuesday for Kindle users. This will be convenient for a lot of Kindle users.

Kindle for PC offers the same options you'll find on a Kindle reader. You can increase or decrease the size of the font and change the width of the page and words per line. You can navigate from one page to another by clicking on the Next or Previous Page arrows or by using the scroll wheel on your mouse. You can jump to a specific page, such as the cover, table of contents, or last page read, and bookmark a specific location for future reference. You can also read notes and highlights created on your Kindle device, but you can't create them on Kindle for PC yet.

The following link provide details of the new additions to the kindle:

Disney is trying to put an end to their paper books. I really would hate for them to stop printing the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cindrella, and Alice in Wonderland. Oh my, what will I do without my disney books.

Many parents purchase these books and read them to their children. I was read to as child and it helped me with my desire learn. Not to mention that the pictures are the best in a Disney book. I believe that it is important for a child to hear their parents voice reading to them. It helps them form their own vocabulary and speech. But disney has come up this great idea, at least thats what they think. Take a look for your self.

Today I decided to purchase two books, "Precious" and "How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk." I have mixed feeling toward the Kindle. Technology has defintely changed a lot of things. Lets see there was the eight track that was replaced by the record, the record was replaced by the cassette, the cassette was replaced by CDs, and CDs have now have been replaced with ipods. I can see technology replacing books, but I want to keep my books. There is nothing like having a book collection, your very own personal library at your disposal. My visit to Books a Million today just opened eyes. Can the Kindle really replace all of these books and magazine? The experiece of seeing kids pulling books of the shelves and reading them. And pursuading their parents to purcase their favorite book was such a delight to see.

Technology has defintely made my life easier. The typewriter was horror in my opinion. I cringe when I have to use that dinosaur. My visist to the local library is very limited. With the help of the search engine, I cant recall my latest visist to my local library.

But the Kindle will never replace my paper book or hard back book. I want my bible sitting on my coffee just in case the devil decides to pay me a visit. The Kindle cant help with that.

Interview with a Librarian

I recently went to one of the schools in Mobile County, specifically St. Elmo Elementary School. I sat down and talked to Laura Dawes, the Librarian and the Technology Advisor. I first informed her of the project that we were doing (Project on Books vs. Technological Devices) and asked if she could give me her opinion as a professional as well as her personal opinion. Mrs. Dawes first told me that she loved the idea of the Kindle saying that, " It takes up less space and you do not have to have your own library to store a bunch of books." I then asked her is she thought that books were ever going to be replaced by devices such as the Kindle. She said, " I don't see books going away in my lifetime or in my children's lifetime. There is just something about holding a book in your hand." She further went on to say, " also there is something about the smell of a book that cannot be substituted." I told her that I agreed but asked her about the convenience of the Kindle? Her response was, "try going to the airport with a Kindle and have to go through the different security check points instead of walking through with a book, and see how much you like it." I laughed and said that I hadn't thought of that. Finally I asked her about the classics and if she appreciated the idea of those books being put on the Kindle. Mrs. Dawes told me that she did not mind having the classics put on the Kindle or books on tape, she just said, "That means I will get more for my autographed, first addition!"
I couldn't have agreed more with her. There are many books and many people that find sitting down with a good book cannot be replaced by the use of a computerized device. However, when it came to textbooks, we both agreed that it might be cheaper in the long run if schools adopted these devices to replace textbooks. Especially in the high school and college settings.
So here we are again, stuck in the middle. Each option has its advantages and its disadvantages. What do you think? Which would you rather have a good book or a Kindle or other technological device?

Books vs the Kindle, who will win?

We have started this blog not only to satisfy our own curiosity, but to gather information and to complete a classroom project. Kindle has been out now for some time as well as other reading devices such as books on tape/cd. We were wondering can books survive? All of our research shows that many people are moving toward the Kindle because of the accessibility and its ability to store hundreds if not thousands of books in one location. We even read a site that said students in the classroom were starting to use them to save money on textbooks, it was an easier way to get books rather than purchasing new ones each year. On the other hand, we have also seen sight were people are completely against the Kindle and other devices because it takes away from the nostalgia of sitting down reading a good book (someone even mentioned the smell of the the older books. So here is our question will books be a thing of the past as we advance technologically? And how would one get an autographed copy of their favorite author's new book?

More things will be posted as I find answers and comments on this topic.
